Charcoal Portrait of H.P. Lovecraft - Beyond the Walls of Sleep

Art project for Andi Munzer , who requested I draw H.P. Lovecraft. This was my first time picking up a piece of charcoal or attempting a realistic portrait. This piece is a tribute to H.P. Lovecraft's short story, "Beyond the Walls of Sleep", featuring intelligences from the Star formerly known as Algol, and the fourth Moon of ♃ Jupiter, Callisto. You can see the glyphs for Callisto, and Algol in the picture if you search (one of them has been turned on its side). The nebulous shapes in the back resemble hands, like the unseen intelligence which pervades the minds of the short story's two main characters. They also represent the Universe itself or perhaps a distant planet with strange landscapes. Importantly, there are life support monitor lines, and the number 42 which is not only the answer to everything according to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but is a key element of Beyond the Walls of Sleep.
